This collection contains records of children who were surrendered by their parents to the Vienna Foundling Home in Austria between the years 1784 and 1841. Records typically include the name of the child, date and place of birth and baptism, date of death, the name of the mother, and the name of a foster parent.<br><br>The index of this collection was produced by MyHeritage from scanned images of the original documents. The collection is provided in partnership with the Wiener Stadt- und Landesarchiv.<br><br>Many of the children who were kept in foundlings homes did not survive to adulthood. However, those who did were often released in their teen and pre-teen years. The origins of these children may be more difficult to trace because of their unique circumstances. These records can be especially useful in identifying a child’s birth parents and origins. Many of the records list the parish where the child was baptized, which could aid in the discovery of church records that include more details about their lives.
